The application of rhythm in the design process.

Abstract

This research explores how the concept of rhythm can enhance the design process. As such, in this paper, I will first attempt to define what rhythm is, what it isn’t, and describe its core elements using musical rhythm as a starting point. I will also analyze the importance of rhythm in a social and cultural context taking the African way of seeing rhythm as an example. Then I will take a look at the works of numerous visual artists and designers, pioneers who were often creating ahead of their time, and sometimes pursued completely different goals, yet, nevertheless, contributed to the exploration of rhythm outside of the musical context. Lastly, after assessing all the references and examples, I will point out the qualities and methods of a design process that can be enhanced by rhythm.
