A visual identity of a city is a limited yet common means of place representation. This research paper investigates the process of creating a visual identity of a city. The work includes an extended analysis of the city of Warsaw and aims to offer the basis for an alternative solution.
The first part of the research consists of an analysis of the origins of visual identities of places and includes present-day examples and solutions. The research shows the importance of a visual identity, the needs of different subjects involved, and the importance of ameliorating communication between them. The second part offers inquiries and surveys concerning the identity of the city of Warsaw, and provides the foundation for a new visual identity.
