“Less Is More” – Minimalism in design

Abstract

From the ancient agricultural era to modern life, people's life has become more and more fast-paced, especially those living in cities who are under more pressure due to various kinds of competition. As a result, 'minimalism' is grad-ually gaining attention, and more people like it.' Minimalism', 'green design' and 'sustainable design' are all becoming trends in design today. Minimalism is not just a design style, it is a philosophy, a culture, an aesthetic definition, a way of thinking about things, and a specific approach to solving problems. Minimalism explores the essence of things, emphasizing a return to the original, a return to nature, a simple way of expressing the richness of connotations, and a simple way of managing complexity. Through my thesis I plan to elaborate on the artistic philosophy of minimal-ist design, I will illustrate the occurrence and expression of minimalist design, and I will explore and interpret both Eastern and Western 'minimalist' ideas. Of course, I will also focus my analysis around 'design style' and 'design methods'. Nowadays, with the rapid development of the internet, information, and big data, the idea of 'minimalism' has become more and more necessary and rich. I hope to discover new connotations in the study of past works of minimalist design. I believe that minimalist design will have a more perfect presentation and will soon become the mainstream in the coming period or certain fields.
