Aesthetics of ugliness in selected Marilyn Manson’s music videos: “The Beautiful People”, “Tourniquet”, and “The Nobodies”

Abstract

In the thesis on the topic “Aesthetics of ugliness in selected Marilyn Manson’s music videos: “The Beautiful People”, “Tourniquet”, and “The Nobodies” ”, the phenomenon of ugliness aesthetics was investigated using the example of Marilyn Manson’s music videos. The works of Freud “Uncanny”, Mary Douglas “Purity and Danger”, Bellmer’s dolls were used as theoretical referencesfor the research. During the work, three videos from the triptych of Marilyn Manson were reviewed: “The Beautiful People”, “Tourniquet”, and “The Nobodies”. As a result, it was found that the author uses aesthetics of ugliness to draw people’s attention to the problems of society with the help of a shocking effect. Later, the studied material was used in the practical part of the diploma, 3D character animation represented in animated cartoon, inspired by an aesthetics of ugliness in works by Marilyn Manson.
