Uses of AR and VR in enhancing cognitive processes.

Abstract

The purpose of the following thesis is to present Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality as tools for enhancing cognitive processes. The thesis statement of this work is: VR and AR technologies will improve humanities cognition as well as play a major role as a cognitive aid. The arguments for this statement are undertaken within the work as well as a deeper analysis of the topic is provided. Firstly, in the introduction, all of the needed concepts are explained, along with first examples of applications of these technologies. In the first chapter, the capacities of AR are described in the sector of education and broadly understood cognitive functions. Later on, the focus shifts to VR technology and the use of this technology in many cognitive fields. Then, in the second chapter AR and VR role as cognitive aids is discussed. Experiences related to dementia and Alzheirmer's are introduced, as well as their role as help for caregivers, families and patients themselves. Finally, the possibility of reducing the cost of dementia and Alzheimer's through new technologies is discussed.
